Humble peat moss forms the basis for the wildly imaginative Latvia Pavilion, which uses the traditional Baltic crop to create carved panels, compressed blocks and textured walls that lead visitors through a series of engaging multimedia exhibits. Zimbabwe is known for the thundering majesty of the Victoria Falls waterfall, and that power and energy is also evident in its people’s indomitable spirit. Designed by Zimbabwean university students, the Zimbabwe Pavilion at Expo 2020 surrounds visitors with impressive towers and stone carvings inspired by the historic Great Zimbabwe settlement. Take a virtual reality tour across Zimbabwe’s savannahs and down the mighty Zambezi River. Then learn about the country’s advances in mining, construction and agriculture, as well as the youthful, skilled workforce pushing Zimbabwe to new heights.

An ideal destination for Expo 2020’s youngest visitors, the Tonga Pavilion is a fanciful, child-friendly journey of discovery with a strong message of conservation. As you venture through the magical forests and blue waters of this Pacific Ocean gem, you’ll encounter moving flowers, talking animals and countless other wonders, as well as educational exhibits on the threat that plastic poses to sea life. Explore Tonga’s “secret islands”, meet Kaho the whale and grab a photo at the seashell wall.

Rather than bury its past, Rwanda has chosen a path of openness and healing, and at Expo 2020, you can see the transformative results in a remarkable journey that leads visitors through the dark of night to the dawn of a new day. The Rwanda Pavilion takes visitors through the nation’s full, unvarnished story, from colonial times to the 1994 genocide to the present day, in which the process of reconciliation has turned the country into a beacon of hope. Attractions include immersive exhibits on Rwandan history, a virtual-reality installation showcasing the nation’s technological advancements and a café in which to reflect on the experience.

The Syria Pavilion celebrates a heritage of sharing knowledge, as well as the nation’s culture of community and perseverance. Examine a Ugarit alphabet tablet and trace its impact on humanity, then learn about Syria’s agricultural history through its seeds and ears of wheat. Add your voice to one of the world’s most ancient musical pieces, the Syrian “Hurrian Hymn”, and experience this ambitious nation’s inspiring vision of a better future for us all.

The Poland Pavilion at Expo 2020 is an elegant homage to the country’s ecological wonders, with a special focus on its treasured native birds.

The forests, rivers and lakes of Poland are the breeding grounds for 25 per cent of Europe’s migratory birds, and you’ll see these fine feathered friends honoured in grand style with the pavilion’s impressive centrepiece: a kinetic sculpture suspended in the air, featuring thousands of fluttering “birds”. Fly on in for a wealth of imaginative exhibits, from immersive virtual-reality experiences to a unique “Polish Table” art installation, complete with interactive light projections.

The Poland Pavilion is a three-level modular wooden structure that expands upwards, surrounded by flocks of white kinetic bird sculptures inspired by the country’s treasured winged residents. Vertical slats of exposed timber form the exterior surfaces of the main building, which resembles a stack of shipping containers arranged into an upside-down pyramid.

Kiribati’s location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is both vast and remote: its 33 atolls stretch almost 4,000 kilometres from east to west. The South East Asian nation of Timor-Leste weaves its culture into every thread of its vibrant, traditional tais fabrics. Each district boasts its own tais patterns, which are dyed using local plants and given as a gift of friendship. Timor-Leste extends that fellowship to you at its Expo 2020 pavilion, which offers beautiful displays of tais and authentic wood carvings, as well as inviting aromas of native spices and local coffee. The pavilion also recreates a bird-like Timor totem house, where you can watch videos spotlighting the resilient working families that power this young nation and add your own thread to their tais.
