Drawing on cutting-edge eco-technology, the Czech Republic Pavilion at Expo 2020 conjures a blooming garden in the Dubai desert literally from thin air. Powered by solar energy and Czech ingenuity, the pavilion’s sustainable vapour harvesting system pulls water from the air to create a beautiful oasis.

You’ll see the artful evidence of this system throughout the pavilion in the form of sweeping, swirling pipes, which not only channel the water but combine into fanciful “clouds” that offer shade. As you follow their flow, you’ll be treated to displays of Czech glassmaking, exhibits exploring desert cultivation and authentic regional cuisine.

A model of form meeting function, the pavilion uses a swirl of hundreds of pipes to create the impression of a cloud rising from a lush desert oasis. These “bioplastic” pipes, which climb in great curls from a garden of palms and shrubbery, are part of an innovative system that uses solar energy to capture water from desert air.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. For thousands of years, Morocco’s Berber people have built their traditional squared homes and villages out of mud brick, producing structures that have stood for centuries. The Morocco Pavilion at Expo 2020 advances this form in dazzling style, combining modern design and rich heritage to create a uniquely vertical journey through Morocco.

As you ascend the ramp through the pavilion, you’ll experience ancient streetscapes and cutting-edge innovations: everything from traditional Moroccan gardens to one of the world’s largest solar-energy plants, Noor-Ouarzazate. It all ends with a stunning panoramic view from the pavilion’s rooftop area.

Belgian comic book character Tintin is always on the move, so it’s only fitting that the country’s showcase honours his colourful legacy. The Belgium Pavilion at Expo 2020 offers a unique comics-inspired tour of the future of mobility, letting you see yourself as a character as you explore smart infrastructure, self-driving vehicles and more.

The pavilion’s lush, curved exterior takes the form of a “green arch”, which uses sustainable technologies to produce more energy than it uses. Inside, you’ll dive into a fun comic-strip world of interactive walls and expeditions into the Belgium of 2050. Don’t miss the country’s famous fries!

Sparked by the concept of a “Green Arch”, the Belgium Pavilion takes the form of a vast four-storey rectangular structure draped in lush greenery. A large welcoming arch carved out of the first and second floors allows visitors to cut diagonally through the entire building. Nearly 100 vertical strips of blonde wood line the longest façades of the pavilion, stretching upwards to evoke the ribs of a great ship.

The breathtaking lakes and forests of Finland are famous for their beautiful coats of pure snow, and for Expo 2020, the Scandinavian land has added its wintry colours to the Dubai desert. Blending Middle Eastern tradition with Nordic flair, the Finland Pavilion casts a white blanket of snow over a Bedouin-inspired tent, all with a warm heart within.

Inside, beyond the pavilion’s striking “snow cape”, you’ll explore a circular storyline of exhibits on Finnish values, from sustainable technologies to the welfare society. But don’t miss the serene central “gorge”, an elegantly designed refuge for peace and reflection.

The Finland Pavilion is a large cube-shaped tent designed to look like it’s coated with a blanket of snow. The structure’s outer façade is made of a white fabric that is stretched over a steel framework. The soaring triangular entryway in its centre has been perfectly cut to resemble the pulled-back flaps of an Arabian tent.

Sustainability is a crucial goal around the world today, but the people of Germany have lived by eco-friendly principles since the early 1700s. At Campus Germany, the country’s university-themed pavilion at Expo 2020, hundreds of hands-on educational experiences combine for an entertaining course in sustainability. Lectures and pop quizzes have no place on this campus, though. The pavilion’s lessons unfold on dynamic digital blackboards, inside giant selfie-friendly ball pits, and across “labs” that feature inventive explorations of our shared sustainable future. It’s all capped with a fun “graduation” ceremony in unique swinging seats.

The Hungary Pavilion celebrates this rich tradition of thermal bathing with a deep dive into the country’s naturally steaming waters. Follow the glowing blue path to tour the hot springs’ geothermal origins, from the mystical cave bath at Miskolctapolca to the grand spas of Budapest. At the end of your journey, relax and reflect in the pavilion’s meditative inner dome, or take a sip of Hungary’s mineral and thermal waters at the Aqua Bar.

The Hungary pavilion is a wide, gently curved concrete cylinder featuring long, vertical planks of exposed wood. Approached from the front, two thick square columns of intricately woven wood frame the entryway and rise above the main building’s domed roof. The entrance plaza features a miniature forest of smart trees, built of the same wood and featuring digital screens and umbrella-like white roofs. In step with the organic design philosophy, these trees blend in seamlessly with the pavilion’s minimalist gardens.

With its enormous population and diversity of ancient traditions, India is a place of incredible richness and complexity. The India Pavilion offers a new take on the country that goes beyond its famed culture and stunning landscapes to show a rising economic power that is very much open for business. The pavilion focuses on “New India”, an emerging global hub for innovation, inspiration and investment. Its wide variety of exhibits feature not just the food, tea and Bollywood entertainment that so many know and love, but also the country’s modern-day advancements in technology, aerospace, manufacturing and more.

The pavilion experience combines visionary holographic and virtual-reality exhibits with a panoramic tour of Serbia’s heritage. The Serbia Pavilion resembles a sharp white crystal jutting high into the sky. The exterior of the structure is composed of flat triangular surfaces, with glowing white edges which grow in size as they climb toward a high, blade-like point. The entire building pitches at an angle, creating an overhang above an entry courtyard. Digital lights adorn the pavilion’s underside, adding to the futuristic feel.
