The Opening Ceremony: A Story of Hope

Expo 2020 Dubai, the first Expo in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region in the 170 years of World Expo history, opened with a celebration of global togetherness and optimism. Spectacular storytelling, performances, fireworks, and immersive projections on the dome of Al Wasl, the heart of Expo 2020, all told a story of collaboration and hope for the future, echoing Expo 2020 Dubai's theme of "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future". Global artists joining in the celebration included Andrea Bocelli, Ellie Goulding, Lang Lang and Mohammed Abdu.

Expo 2020 Dubai Opening Ceremony

Long ago, travellers referred to Dubai as Al Wasl, or “the connection” – a name that reflects the area’s heritage as a meeting point. This spirit of coming together takes shape in Al Wasl Plaza, Expo 2020’s spectacular centrepiece and gathering ground for celebration and wonder. 

Situated at the meeting point of Expo’s three thematic districts, Al Wasl Plaza's dome is tall enough to fit the Leaning Tower of Pisa beneath it. By night, she transforms into a 360-degree projection screen, blanketed by more than 250 state-of-the-art projectors. Al Wasl Plaza is a hub for visitors and the vibrant heart of our Expo.

Al Wasl Plaza is 130 metres in diameter and more than 67 metres tall. Delicate-looking despite its titanic scale, her pattern is inspired by our Expo's logo, which is fully visible at the oculus.

Join us and celebrate Turkmenistan National Day at Expo 2020

The Central Asian nation of Turkmenistan has been a crossroads of cultures since the days of the Silk Road. The Turkmenistan Pavilion offers a bold showcase of the region’s diverse people and places, celebrating its rich history and future promise as a global meeting ground.

The exterior design draws inspiration from traditional circular tents, or yurts, handcrafted carpets, and Akhal-Teke horses, and the pavilion dazzles thanks to a colossal 50-metre LED screen that spans one side. Inside, a wealth of technologically enhanced exhibits showcase the best of Turkmenistan’s culture, landscapes, export goods and more.


A fountain sculpture featuring five of Turkmenistan’s majestic Akhal-Teke horses greet visitors at the vast Central Asian country’s Expo 2020 pavilion. Directly behind the water feature, the face of the rectangular main building echoes the theme, clad in horizontal blonde wood slats of varying widths arranged to create the shape of a giant horse’s head.

Burkina Faso means “Land of the Honest People”, and this West African country’s pavilion encompasses that sense of warmth and resilience, with vivid displays devoted to its natural and cultural wonders. Take in unique sights, including a recreation of the Ruins of Loropéni’s imposing stone walls, a millennia-old Saharan gold traders’ fortress. Enjoy scenes from Africa’s largest film festival, FESPACO, which has taken place in Burkina Faso’s capital city Ouagadougou for half a-century, and live demonstrations of the rich variety of crafts created by the vast number of ethnic groups that call Burkina Faso home from elaborate masks to antelope carvings, as well as colourful conical hats and intricately designed batik fabric.

The Norway Pavilion takes the form of an impressive vessel with a leading edge that juts forward and up like the prow of a ship. The façade of the pavilion consists of uniform metal panels with large windows of varying widths and heights along its long flank.
