This event is a public rally to raise awareness and a celebration of the World Food Day international themes; including spotlighting UAE’s leadership role in relevant areas and highlighting best practice and success stories of Expo2020 Dubai participants. This is the UAE official World Food Day celebration and following a short ceremony we will have a diverse set of actors provide a conversation framed on an agri-food systems-based approach that looks to connect the theme of World Food Day.

This celebration will call for global solidarity in rethinking and reshaping food security and agri-food systems in ways that ensure healthy lives and sustain people and planet. António Guterres, the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations, took office on 1st January 2017.
Having witnessed the suffering of the most vulnerable people on earth, in refugee camps and in war zones, the Secretary-General is determined to make human dignity the core of his work, and to serve as a peace broker, a bridge-builder and a promoter of reform and innovation. Prior to his appointment as Secretary-General, Mr. Guterres served as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015. Before joining UNHCR, Mr. Guterres spent more than 20 years in government and public service. He served as prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002, during which time he was heavily involved in the international effort to resolve the crisis in East Timor.

Qu Dongyu took office on 1 August 2019 as Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Born in 1963 to a rice-growing family in China’s Hunan Province, Qu studied horticultural science at Hunan Agricultural University and then plant breeding and genetics at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He later added environmental science to his knowledge portfolio while earning a PhD at Wageningen University, in the Netherlands. Before coming to FAO, Qu served as China’s Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, where one of his achievements was to promote inclusive and innovative development and make sure information and communication technologies (ICT) were available in rural areas so that more than 400 million farmers could use their smartphones as a new farming tool.

Mr. AbdulHakim Elwaer, is FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa. Mr. Elwaer, a Libyan national, holds a Ph.D. of Philosophy in Environmental Chemistry from Sheffield University, the United Kingdom.  Prior to joining the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), he served as Adviser to the President on Global Advocacy and Partnerships at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he also served as the IsDB Spokesperson and Director of Cooperation, Partnerships, Regional Integration and Resource Mobilization from 2014 to 2017.

Dr. Abdulhakim Rajab Elwaer

As the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Dr. Kalibata provides leadership, guidance, and strategic direction towards the 2021 Food Systems Summit. She is responsible for outreach and cooperation with key leaders to ensure the Summit serves as a catalyst within the Decade of Action to improve food systems around the world to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Paris Agreement. Since 2014, Dr. Kalibata has also served as President of AGRA, where she leads the organization’s efforts with partners to ensure a food secure and prosperous Africa through rapid, sustainable agricultural growth, improving the productivity and livelihoods of millions of African smallholder farmers. Prior to joining AGRA, Dr. Kalibata was Rwanda’s Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) from 2008 to 2014.

Since August 2016, Gerda Verburg (The Netherlands) has served as UN Assistant Secretary-General and Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, working with the 62 country governments that lead the SUN Movement, united with UN agencies, civil society, business and donors, in a common mission to defeat malnutrition in all its forms.
Prior to her appointment, she served as Chair of the Agenda Council for Food and Nutrition of the World Economic Forum (WEF), 2014; Chair of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS), 2013; Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to FAO, IFAD and WFP from 2011. 
Ms. Verburg was elected Chair of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 17) in 2008, following her appointment the previous year as Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of the Netherlands.

Dr. Máximo Torero Cullen is the Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). He joined the Organization in January 2019 as Assistant Director-General for the Economic and Social Development Department. Prior to joining FAO, he was the World Bank Group Executive Director for Argentina, Bolivia, Chile Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay since November 2016 and before the Bank Dr. Torero led the Division of the Markets, Trade, and Institutions at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).  Dr. Torero, a national of Peru, holds a Ph.D. and a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of the Pacific, Lima, Peru.

With over 12 years of experience working at the intersection of food security and nutrition, Christine Campeau has acquired an in-depth understanding of the complexities and trends involved in addressing the immediate and underlying causes of malnutrition. In her current role as Senior Advisor – Food Systems and Deputy Chair UNFSS AT4, Christine worked alongside Action Track Chairs on the 18-month process of collecting over 2,000 ideas to transform food systems for people, the planet and prosperity. Christine holds a Master of International Relations from Webster University, Geneva Switzerland, with combined focuses on international diplomacy and climate-induced migration.

Tom Davis, MPH, is currently the Partnership Leader for Health & Nutrition for World Vision International based in Geneva. He currently provides leadership over World Vision's 2019-2030 investment of $7 billion USD for health, nutrition, and WASH in more than 46 countries.  He has more than 35 years of domestic and international field experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating MCHN and education programs, and social and behavioural change activities, in food security, nutrition, child survival, HIV and other projects in 27 countries.  He served as Chief Program Officer for Food for the Hungry from 2012 to 2013 and Feed the Children between 2013 and 2015.  Tom also served as the Senior Specialist for Social and Behavioral Change on the TOPS Project from 2010 to 2013.

Dr. De Jager is president of the World Farmers’ Organisation and former president of the Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU, 2013-2018) and of the Pan African Farmers Union (PAFO, 2014-2017). He is also chairman of the board of Agri All Africa, a board member of FANRPAN and serves on the board of Agri Limpopo, where he is responsible for land reform, transformation, farmer development and Africa Liaison since 2004.
He has farmed in South Africa since 1997 (in the South African Lowveld region) with timber and subtropical fruits (avocados, mangoes and macadamia nuts) and also keeps goats.

Dr. Theo De Jager

Victor is the Regional Coordinator for Nourishing Africa that provides the structures of support around agri-food entrepreneurs including access to funding, capacity building, a continental marketplace, networking events, data and mentoring. In it, he is responsible for membership recruitment, building strategic partnerships and facilitating program implementation in East Africa. 
Victor also serves as the East African Coordinator of the Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network (CSAYN) and is also the Co-Chair of the Youth Liaisons Group to the historic UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) where he works to build youth engagement and meaningful youth representation and participation in transforming global food systems.
