International artists respond to the Expo 2020 Dubai sub-theme of Sustainability

Introduction

Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is home to a quintet of thought-provoking art installations from artists around the world. Each piece demonstrates a response to the issue of sustainability and was commissioned in collaboration with Art Dubai, adding another layer of engagement to Terra’s emotive exploratory experience, designed to empower visitors to think creatively about the impact of our actions on the planet.

Terrapolis (Ayman Zedani)

The identities of all who have worked on Terra are transformed into digital entities in a simulation of a parallel reality. Each is an individual in the digital space using the algorithm as a portal blurring the distinction between life forms.

Equinox (Mat Collishaw)

Equinox is a 3D zoetrope, an optical illusion that considers the delicate calibration of Earth's ecosystems. The giant lotus flower hosts an orbit of insects, its petals acting as shutters animating the anthropods within.

Measuring (Mohammed Kazem)

Measuring challenges common architectural norms of understanding a space. Kazem uses his own personal logic to measure the walls − one that has a direct relation to the building, materials, location and his particular understanding of them.

Directions, Expo 2020 (Mohammed Kazem)

Directions represents the geographic coordinates of visitors to Terra. In Kazem's words: "These are...shadows of human steps, and the movement of souls united by devotion and unhampered by the restrictions of time or place".

The success of the human and natural worlds have always been connected. The two halves of artwork merge together to become one, the theory of one-to-many, unity and differences and suggesting that man and nature thrive together and are not separate.
