Open-heartedness and ambition are values captured by the UAE Pavilion, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. The remarkable building is reminiscent of a falcon in flight, inspired by our national bird. Once inside, go on a multisensory journey that chronicles the rise of a nation of “dreamers who do”. Traverse a dreamlike landscape filled with dunes of real sand to learn about our nation’s founding father Sheikh Zayed, the natural wonders of the Emirates and their rapid modernisation. Be inspired by stories of the UAE dreamers building an inclusive future as the desert sun filters through the pavilion’s oculus. 

The design of the UAE Pavilion evokes a falcon in flight; referencing the Emirates’ traditional art of falconry. The main building resembles a titanic oval, with a grand, four storey entrance set into the tip. More than 25 feather-like panels are arranged at the dome of the pavilion, each curving down toward the entry of the structure.

To commemorate this historic event, Expo 2020 Dubai will celebrate the UAE’s extraordinary journey over the last 50 years, while also looking towards the next 50. Kazakhstan arrives at Expo 2020 with dramatic swooping architecture and a warm “Salamatsyz ba!” – or “Hello!” At the Kazakhstan Pavilion, you’ll undertake a journey through grassy steppes and technological achievements as you learn about the sense of shared destiny the Kazakhs call Mangilik El – or the “Eternal Nation”. Inside are countless wonders to explore, from a visually impressive pre-show featuring floating digital strands of DNA, to immersive exhibits on Kazakhstan’s mineral wealth. If you’re wondering why the pavilion uses the spelling “Qazaqstan”, it’s because the nation plans to officially change its entire alphabet in 2025!

The Kazakhstan Pavilion consists of a detached rectangular shell with archways that reveal a golden core building beneath. Inspired by the latticework of traditional Kazakh circular tents, or yurts, the pavilion’s white outer façade is perforated with algorithmically arranged holes that allow the building to breathe and, after dark, create a starry light display.

Enjoy an evening with award-winning saxophonist and composer, Artur. A graduate in music from Berklee College in Boston, Artur founded the Art Voices Ethno Band and won a grand prize at the International Jazz Competition in Bucharest in 2009. He currently resides in Dubai and is collaborating with the Indian ethno-jazz fusion band Voyage.

At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

Sustainability is a crucial goal around the world today, but the people of Germany have lived by eco-friendly principles since the early 1700s. At Campus Germany, the country’s university-themed pavilion at Expo 2020, hundreds of hands-on educational experiences combine for an entertaining course in sustainability. Lectures and pop quizzes have no place on this campus, though. The pavilion’s lessons unfold on dynamic digital blackboards, inside giant selfie-friendly ball pits, and across “labs” that feature inventive explorations of our shared sustainable future. It’s all capped with a fun “graduation” ceremony in unique swinging seats.

The Germany Pavilion is a non-traditional structure consisting of several silver cubes stacked like blocks around an open central atrium. A massive shade structure, held up by a grid-like network of hundreds of thin pillars, hangs over the entirety of the main building. The pavilion and its landscaping have the open feeling of a modern university recreation hall area, surrounded by walkways, palm trees, and small gardens.
