In February 1968, this nation's founding fathers met under a desert tent and shared an idea that would turn into something truly great: the United Arab Emirates. Animated by this spirit of collaboration, The Good Place by Expo Live is an exhibition space dedicated to showcasing human potential and those who work to advance it – through the Expo Live innovation and partnership programme and beyond.

With a design inspired by the tent where the UAE was conceived, the pavilion showcases social innovations conceived to improve our lives. Come and meet ordinary people doing extraordinary things – and be inspired to join our global community.

Designed by renowned Emirati architect Ahmad Abdulrahman Bukhash, The Good Place’s structure expands the Bedouin tent shape into an elegant white canopy, folded with seven origami-like angles on each side to join at a tall peak. The tent seems to float over a clean, glass box.

The Limitless Potential of Artificial Intelligence

Inspired by British physicist Stephen Hawking, who challenged humanity to ponder how we might express ourselves to alien civilisations, the UK Pavilion invites visitors to contribute to a unique linguistic experiment. While exploring this cone-shaped structure, which showcases the UK’s contributions to space science and artificial intelligence, you can add your own words to the pavilion’s neural network. A language-generating algorithm then processes these entries into an ever-changing “poem” that will be displayed on the pavilion’s LED façade, providing an inspiring collective message to Expo 2020, our planet and maybe even worlds beyond.

The awe-inspiring UK Pavilion is an epic, 20-metre-tall, cone-shaped structure compiled of rows of horizontal timber slats that stretch forward to create a circular form. The end of each slat houses a LED panel that emits phrases that link to form an ever-changing interstellar message crafted by artificial intelligence and Expo visitors.

Expo 2020 Dubai’s purpose embodies the two main pillars of these goals: sustainability and opportunity. The global COVID-19 pandemic has further proved the urgency of this global agenda. As this mega-event takes place, Expo 2020 Dubai will become the center of commitment and action in ensuring that no one is left behind. Uganda’s primeval mountain forests are places of deep mystery and rich legend, home to mighty silverback gorillas and dense thickets of vines and roots. The Uganda Pavilion cuts a perfect walking trail through these famous landscapes, offering visitors a unique chance to explore the nation’s forests, cultures, economic opportunities and more. “Hike” between tall simulated trees, immerse yourself in digital wildlife exhibits and journey into Uganda’s five ancestral kingdoms.

Uganda - United Arab Emirates Convention and Exhibition

Studies have shown that women are discouraged from, or less interested in, entering the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) from a young age. According to the Pew Research Centre, women remain underrepresented in engineering, as well as both computer and physical sciences, which are often considered male-dominated fields. United Nations data shows that less than 30% of scientific researchers worldwide are women. 

To celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, true stories of females leading the way in scientific fields are highlighted to break down barriers and encourage more women and girls to pursue careers in STEM. Scientists from around the world share their personal perspectives and journeys of success, focussing on female empowerment and promoting the roles of women in science.

In Chinese culture, the lantern symbolises happiness and good fortune and now, the country is casting this favourable light over Expo 2020. The lantern-shaped China Pavilion offers an illuminating historical tour of Chinese innovation, including a monumental “moveable type” wall that transforms at night into a digital light display.

The pavilion showcases thousands of years of Chinese culture and technology. From ancient China’s invention of world-changing technologies such as the compass and gunpowder to the nation’s modern-day advancements in artificial intelligence, there’s no end of innovation here to explore.

The inspiration for the stately yet energetic China Pavilion takes the literal shape of a traditional Chinese lantern: a monumental central column of stacked square red blocks capped in gleaming gold, surrounded by an airy, curved outer wall patterned in a geometric Chinese window lattice motif.

On the Caribbean island of Grenada, they take their spices seriously – so much so that the country’s leading crop, nutmeg, features prominently on its national flag. At the Grenada Pavilion, you’ll tour the fragrant wonders of this beautiful “Isle of Spice”, from cinnamon and clove to turmeric and more. Along the way, you can enjoy the rhythms of Grenadian calypso and soca music, and learn about the island’s relaxed lifestyle and welcoming culture.
