In February 1968, this nation's founding fathers met under a desert tent and shared an idea that would turn into something truly great: the United Arab Emirates. Animated by this spirit of collaboration, The Good Place by Expo Live is an exhibition space dedicated to showcasing human potential and those who work to advance it – through the Expo Live innovation and partnership programme and beyond.

With a design inspired by the tent where the UAE was conceived, the pavilion showcases social innovations conceived to improve our lives. Come and meet ordinary people doing extraordinary things – and be inspired to join our global community.

Designed by renowned Emirati architect Ahmad Abdulrahman Bukhash, The Good Place’s structure expands the Bedouin tent shape into an elegant white canopy, folded with seven origami-like angles on each side to join at a tall peak. The tent seems to float over a clean, glass box.

At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

Terra is a super-sized marvel of forward-thinking design. The pavilion’s technology generates enough energy in a year to power a Nissan Leaf to drive halfway to Mars, while another system captures moisture from the air you breathe and turns it into drinkable water. The Oman Pavilion takes visitors on a panoramic tour of one of the Arabian Peninsula’s great treasures: frankincense, used in perfumes and incense since ancient times.

Omanis have been harvesting and trading this precious resin for some 5,000 years, and their expertise, care and innovation are on full display in every corner of the whimsically tree-shaped pavilion. Visit with a hyper-real animatronic Boswellia sacra tree, learn the resin’s history and heritage from virtual-reality storytellers, explore a botanical “library of life” tended by robots – or just let the delicate aromas of frankincense relax you at the pavilion’s scent bar.


Oman

The Oman Pavilion is both mystical and futuristic. Pale wood slats are vertically arranged to form a trunk that balloons out, stretching upward in an organic, tree-like shape. The structures branches vary in width and weight and cup a white drum-like building patterned with lacy shapes that resemble roots and leaves.

Ancient Syrian city Ugarit is the birthplace of the world’s oldest alphabet: a tiny clay tablet carved with the symbols that sparked the evolution of the written word. The Syria Pavilion celebrates a heritage of sharing knowledge, as well as the nation’s culture of community and perseverance. Examine a Ugarit alphabet tablet and trace its impact on humanity, then learn about Syria’s agricultural history through its seeds and ears of wheat. Add your voice to one of the world’s most ancient musical pieces, the Syrian “Hurrian Hymn”, and experience this ambitious nation’s inspiring vision of a better future for us all.

A full-scale mirror world may not exist yet, but existing navigation tools, and augmented reality games available on our smartphones are already giving us a glimpse of these new realities.

In the not-too-distant future, we can expect to see a digital representation, or “digital twin”, of every object around us: buildings, bridges, human beings, and more. Machines such as self-driving cars or everyday accessories such as glasses will be able to “read” the mirror world, while navigating the physical one. Applications range from industry to healthcare, education, retail sales, and smart cities.

As this new hybrid world becomes reality and terms like Mirror Worlds, Augmented or Mixed reality and Digital Twins become more mainstream, a number of fundamental questions around ownership, security, privacy and ethics will need to be addressed.

Inspired by British physicist Stephen Hawking, who challenged humanity to ponder how we might express ourselves to alien civilisations, the UK Pavilion invites visitors to contribute to a unique linguistic experiment. While exploring this cone-shaped structure, which showcases the UK’s contributions to space science and artificial intelligence, you can add your own words to the pavilion’s neural network. A language-generating algorithm then processes these entries into an ever-changing “poem” that will be displayed on the pavilion’s LED façade, providing an inspiring collective message to Expo 2020, our planet and maybe even worlds beyond.

The awe-inspiring UK Pavilion is an epic, 20-metre-tall, cone-shaped structure compiled of rows of horizontal timber slats that stretch forward to create a circular form. The end of each slat houses a LED panel that emits phrases that link to form an ever-changing interstellar message crafted by artificial intelligence and Expo visitors.
