Given that contemporary ideas of knowledge and education have privileged the textual, other forms of cultural knowledge - oral, musical or movement based - need closer attention in  order for us to better understand our antecedents. This series of round tables, keynotes and performances will explore the preservation and knowledge of Intangible Cultural Heritage and its contribution to the development of new partnerships across sustainability, climate change, community building and coexistence. At a time of rapid and profound change in our socio-economic and natural ecosystems, intangible heritage is more likely to dissipate at an increased pace. Without rapid response, especially in regions least represented in international safeguarding efforts, we might lose these valuable practices and knowledge forever. A ‘listening pause’ gives the stage to those practitioners who are grappling with these questions in critical ways.

The Spain Pavilion at Expo 2020 is an open, eco-friendly exhibition that seamlessly blends ancient heritage and cutting-edge innovation.

An airy ground floor features several small, naturally cooled plazas that are ideal for relaxing or snacking on tapas. Venture underground into aroomy basement, and you’ll explore a “forest of the future” filled with thought-provoking exhibits on Spain’s contributions to global sustainability.

Inspired by Spain’s age-old links to the Arab world, the Spain Pavilion takes the shape of a lively field of sheer, conical towers in hues of brick, orange, and saffron yellow. Visitors venture under this vast canopy of peaks, built from reusable materials including wood, iron and fabric, to explore a series of breezy plazas. The underside of each airy dome is decorated with unique textures that reflect their exhibits: swirls of woven straw, a green canopy of plants, falls of digital water, and more. One dome also shelters a tasty tapas restaurant.

During this Theme Week, Expo will present and celebrate the knowledge, culture and heritage of all our participating nations, bringing them together under the UAE’s Golden Jubilee theme of Human Solidarity. Topics of discussion will include intangible and tangible heritage, creative industries, and knowledge economies, among other things.

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) Opening Ceremony and the Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony will be held at Expo 2020 Dubai, bringing together global leaders and sustainability pioneers from more than 190 countries to work together towards a sustainable future.

Since 2008, ADSW has grown to become one of the largest platforms of its kind in the world. Through its year round initiatives and events, ADSW brings members of the global community together to accelerate sustainable development. Hosted by Masdar, ADSW 2022 brings a series of high-level virtual events to explore opportunities for accelerating Global Collaboration & Leadership, Economic Development, and Technology & Innovation.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize is the UAE’s pioneering global award in sustainability and a tribute to the legacy of the late founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Established in 2008, this annual award recognises and rewards the achievements of those who are driving impactful, innovative and inspiring sustainability solutions across five distinct categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water and Global High Schools. This year, the Prize Ceremony is in its 14th cycle, with The Awards Ceremony bringing together finalists from around the world, who are all vying to win to amplify or launch their sustainable solution or project.

Expo 2020 connects minds from around the globe. These connections are not limited to the pavilions and parks, but also extend to the vast Dubai Exhibition Centre: a new, state-of-the-art venue for conferences, concerts and more. 

Conveniently located next to the recently completed Expo 2020 metro station, with striking views of the magnificent domed Al Wasl Plaza, the DEC offers 45,000 square metres of customisable event space, 14 exhibition and multi-use halls, on-site catering, and best-in-class audio-visual resources.


A light geometric pattern decorates the DEC’s extraordinarily broad front façade, which features a giant overhanging arch over the entrance to the central plaza area, as well as sloped surfaces that seem to angle away from the entrance like a pair of wings

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated educational disruption represents a catastrophe for the schooling, learning, and earning potential of the more than
110 million students from pre-primary to higher education in the Middle East
and North Africa (MENA). An entire generation of students, children and adolescents has been affected by this unprecedented disruption, with a potential far-reaching impact beyond the education sector to include consequences for their mental health, well-being, socialisation and prospects for being active participants in society, including in the labour market. Efforts to ensure access to learning have varied - from country to country and by grade - and have included face-to-face learning, hybrid learning and full remote learning (comprising digital learning platforms, television and radio broadcasts and distribution of paper-based materials).
Despite these efforts, evidence shows that approximately 40 per cent of students in MENA (37 million children and adolescents) have not benefitted from any remote learning initiative, the majority of whom were already vulnerable and disadvantaged. The main reasons for exclusion were the lack of availability of remote learning initiatives and the lack of tools to access remote learning
(particularly digital devices and internet connections). This event convenes leading experts in the region to examine the consequences of digital poverty and explore solutions to close this gap for greater equity in children's education outcomes in the MENA region.

How do we foster partnerships to expand ICT infrastructure for families, teachers and schools and support digital skills development to reduce the digital gap in poor, rural and remote areas?


Ted Chaiban was appointed as Regional Director, MENA in October 2019. Prior to this assignment, he was the Director of Programmes for UNICEF where he provided strategic leadership, management support and overall direction to UNICEF’s programming. He spearheaded the development of the Global Partnership to "End Violence Against Children" and "Education Cannot Wait", addressing violence against children and education in emergency matters. Ted Chaiban grounded UNICEF’s work for children on the move and guided the integration of humanitarian and development work.

Sonia Ben Jaafar currently serves as the CEO of the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, one of the largest privately funded philanthropic education initiatives in the Arab world. Prior to this role, she was the Managing Director of EduEval, where she cultivated partnerships with governments, international agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and multinational corporations to promote evidence-based decisions for a greater positive impact on education. She holds a PhD in Educational Leadership, and a MA in Curriculum Studies from the University of Toronto. She is passionate about coupling her experience with her academic background to promote knowledge sharing and education for good.

Back in 2015, United Nations unveiled the Sustainable Development Goals as a means to work towards a better future. Expo 2020 Dubai’s purpose embodies the two main pillars of these goals: sustainability and opportunity. The global COVID-19 pandemic has further proved the urgency of this global agenda. As this mega-event takes place, Expo 2020 Dubai will become the center of commitment and action in ensuring that no one is left behind.
