At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

The pavilion’s technology generates enough energy in a year to power a Nissan Leaf to drive halfway to Mars, while another system captures moisture from the air you breathe and turns it into drinkable water. With its enormous population and diversity of ancient traditions, India is a place of incredible richness and complexity. The India Pavilion offers a new take on the country that goes beyond its famed culture and stunning landscapes to show a rising economic power that is very much open for business. The pavilion focuses on “New India”, an emerging global hub for innovation, inspiration and investment. Its wide variety of exhibits feature not just the food, tea and Bollywood entertainment that so many know and love, but also the country’s modern-day advancements in technology, aerospace, manufacturing and more.

The India pavilion is a four-level rectangular structure, covered on its upper three floors with rotating tiles in hues of red, orange, and white. 

This kinetic exterior surface also serves as a screen for projected images, such as the face of Mahatma Gandhi. The bottom level features a plate-glass façade.

"I Can" Superpower by GEMS

What unique qualities do women bring to the table as global leaders? Join Her Excellency, Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General, Expo 2020 Dubai; and Indra Nooyi, former CEO and Chairman of PepsiCo, as they share what inspires and motivates them to create change. They will also share what gives their life purpose, how they leverage their global influence to champion women’s rights and what they see as the next steps in creating a more equal world for all.

Indra Nooyi is one of the world’s foremost business visionaries and a groundbreaker in global business. She is the former Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of PepsiCo, and recent author of her memoir, My Life in Full: Work, Family, and Our Future.

This conversation will be moderated by the Festival’s Director, Ahlam Bolooki

The Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre is a performance space hosting cultural performances and live music for seated crowds, located in Al Forsan Park. The venue’s design features a model of two Ghaf trees that intertwine above the centre of the stage.

Curated by the United Arab Emirates Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, this panel discussion sheds light on youth championing as a core value to achieving the vision for the future. The event celebrates the efforts of those who have made helping youth succeed a priority in their lives, by adopting their initiatives and idiologies. Moreover, the session focuses on youth themselves highlighting their achievements, their dare to dream, and inspiring their peers in doing so.

Keynote panelists include Noura Al Mansouri, Marine Biologist at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD); Heyam Al Blooshi, MAIT and QA Engineer at the UAE Space Agency; Badr Ward, Founder of Lamsa; and Muhamed Nebuhan Shajahan, Computer Engineering Student at Khalifa University. The session is moderated by Dr. Mariet Westerman, Vice Chancellor at NYUAD.

Open-heartedness and ambition are values captured by the UAE Pavilion, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. The remarkable building is reminiscent of a falcon in flight, inspired by our national bird. Once inside, go on a multisensory journey that chronicles the rise of a nation of “dreamers who do”. Traverse a dreamlike landscape filled with dunes of real sand to learn about our nation’s founding father Sheikh Zayed, the natural wonders of the Emirates and their rapid modernisation. Be inspired by stories of the UAE dreamers building an inclusive future as the desert sun filters through the pavilion’s oculus. 

The design of the UAE Pavilion evokes a falcon in flight; referencing the Emirates’ traditional art of falconry. The main building resembles a titanic oval, with a grand, four storey entrance set into the tip. More than 25 feather-like panels are arranged at the dome of the pavilion, each curving down toward the entry of the structure.

Water is the foundation of all life on Earth. It is central to sustainable development, thriving ecosystems and the survival of humanity. Yet, this most precious resource is ﬁnite and must be used and consumed wisely. Many of the most pressing challenges our world is facing, such as climate change, food security or conﬂict, are linked to water and can only be solved through adequate water governance, integrated resource management, and cooperation.
The annual global World Water Day invites the world to celebrate the importance of water, exploring the various dimensions in which humans interact with water and sparking conversations on how we can reimagine our relationship with water. The World Water Day at Expo 2020 Dubai explores how we can improve the sustainable use and consumption of water and preserve water resources for future generations through innovation, activism, governance, and behavioral change. Everyone has a role to play in protecting our most precious resource and the World Water Day spotlights this through storytelling, discussions with thought leaders and experts.
