As part of the International Day of La Francophonie at Expo 2020 Dubai, the OIF (Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie) is organizing a series of four conferences in "Ted Talks" format to promote innovations and young talents in the Francophonie of the future. This first meeting focuses on the theme: "Digital, a powerful lever for action at the service of young people". Keynote speakers include Ben-Manson Toussaint from Haiti, who is a researcher and entrepreneur in artificial intelligence, and Co-founder of the specialized translation platform Seekncheck; alongside Matina Razafimahefa from Madagascar, Co-founder of Sayna - the first digital school in Madagascar.

At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

As the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics on the development of humanity intensifies, our responsibility and oversight must keep pace, to understand how to use these systems, what tasks they should carry out, and their risks. 

As far back as 2014, Stephen Hawking said that efforts to create thinking machines “could spell the end of the human race”. As AI rapidly takes off, the potential issues of robots learning on their own – and at a faster pace than humans – have become apparent. 

Designing these systems is not just a matter of engineering: it must equally be a deeply social and ethical endeavour. As UNESCO prepares the world’s first standards on the ethics of AI, there is broad consensus that we need to create rules for this brave new world. Collectively, we need to ensure that these systems are human centred, inclusive, unbiased, and ethically coherent – perhaps even more so than our subjective human systems are right now.

Capped by a digitally enhanced “cumulus cloud” that provides shade in the daytime and a canvas for dazzling light displays at night, the Australia Pavilion is a vibrant showcase for the kind of imagination Australians like to call “Blue Sky Dreaming”.

Inside and out, the focus here is on Australian innovation. From the ancient astronomy of the Aboriginal peoples, which you can learn about through an immersive projection show on the pavilion’s interior dome, to the sustainably produced timber that forms the pavilion’s hill-shaped exterior, there’s no shortage of blue-sky ideas here to explore.

With a crescent-shaped first level that resembles dusty hills and a cloud-like shade structure hanging overhead, the Australia Pavilion is designed to evoke a dramatic Outback landscape.

There are more than 1,400 thermal springs in Hungary, in which Hungarians have soaked for health and relaxation for centuries. The Hungary Pavilion celebrates this rich tradition of thermal bathing with a deep dive into the country’s naturally steaming waters. Follow the glowing blue path to tour the hot springs’ geothermal origins, from the mystical cave bath at Miskolctapolca to the grand spas of Budapest. At the end of your journey, relax and reflect in the pavilion’s meditative inner dome, or take a sip of Hungary’s mineral and thermal waters at the Aqua Bar.

The Hungary pavilion is a wide, gently curved concrete cylinder featuring long, vertical planks of exposed wood. Approached from the front, two thick square columns of intricately woven wood frame the entryway and rise above the main building’s domed roof. The entrance plaza features a miniature forest of smart trees, built of the same wood and featuring digital screens and umbrella-like white roofs. In step with the organic design philosophy, these trees blend in seamlessly with the pavilion’s minimalist gardens.

Now, you can take your own “dive” through the nation’s aquatic wonderlands at the Philippines Pavilion, an imaginative coral village packed with artistic wonders and a powerful message about safeguarding marine life.

The pavilion’s bold, free-flowing design simulates the coral ecosystem, while light filtering and other effects lend it all a magically oceanic feel.

Taking inspiration from the island nation’s pristine coral reefs, the Philippines Pavilion is a multi-level collection of stacked, open-air mesh structures that curve around palm trees, tropical gardens and small exhibit areas. The pavilion’s many coral-like formations, which resemble huge, rounded, open-topped containers, are made from a lattice of grey graphite wire. The structures layer on top of each other in irregular shapes, creating a free-flowing space full of shaded passages, projected digital exhibitions and gardens to explore.
