The Fijian word “bula” is a versatile term that conjures a friendly spirit of happiness and good fortune. At the Fiji Pavilion, you can learn this island paradise’s blissful secrets on a tour of its seven steps to becoming a “bulannaire” – one who is rich in happiness.

The pavilion’s wealth of exhibits include relaxing tropical hammocks and gorgeous views of Fiji, but it’s not all smiles: the low-lying archipelago is already threatened by climate change, through rising sea levels and dying coral reefs. Journey through a “sunken island”, where you can learn about the nation’s looming challenges and its inspiring climate leadership.

The Switzerland Pavilion's bold, funnel-shaped mirror façade reflects the ground in front of the pavilion: a massive red carpet decorated with a white Swiss cross. The polygonal mirror panels converge at a  doorway in the lower left of the building, crafted from scaffolding and textiles inspired by Bedouin tents.

The Lebanon Pavilion is a low-slung, L-shaped building with a broad wall of windows on its short, curving, front face. The structure is wrapped in horizontal bands of lightly-coloured material, creating a unique striped look.

Its pavilion skips from the protected nature preserve of its tropical Bijagos Islands, where sacred saltwater hippos and grey parrots thrive, to the dusty grandeur of Portuguese colonial-era buildings in friendly capital Bissau without missing a beat.

In Chinese culture, the lantern symbolises happiness and good fortune and now, the country is casting this favourable light over Expo 2020. The lantern-shaped China Pavilion offers an illuminating historical tour of Chinese innovation, including a monumental “moveable type” wall that transforms at night into a digital light display.

The pavilion showcases thousands of years of Chinese culture and technology. From ancient China’s invention of world-changing technologies such as the compass and gunpowder to the nation’s modern-day advancements in artificial intelligence, there’s no end of innovation here to explore.

The inspiration for the stately yet energetic China Pavilion takes the literal shape of a traditional Chinese lantern: a monumental central column of stacked square red blocks capped in gleaming gold, surrounded by an airy, curved outer wall patterned in a geometric Chinese window lattice motif.

Hammour House - Audio Guide

Hammour House is an experiential art installation and community project that raises awareness about endangered coral ecosystems by creating a 'reef' using recycled and sustainable materials. Named after the orange-spotted grouper, or hammour fish, local to the Arabian Gulf’s coral, the installation combines student paintings to form vibrant floating panels that mimic local reefs. With contributions from artists, students, fishermen and research institutions, the project also offers publications, workshops and talks during Expo. This project was inspired by the One Thousand and One Nights story of Abdullah the Fisherman and Abdullah the Merman.

A colourful message of conservation and discovery of the aquatic world awaits at the ever-evolving community art project Hammour House. This unique experiential installation raises awareness about endangered coral ecosystems by creating an imaginative, walk-through 'reef' from children’s artwork, ghost nets and recycled plastic that would have ordinarily ended up in landfills.
