With a striking design that takes inspiration from the natural world and strives to protect it as well, the Azerbaijan Pavilion invites visitors on a journey to discover how each of us can pitch in to restore balance to the planet.

Outside the pavilion, a vast leaf-shaped solar roof harnesses the sun’s rays, while the stylised wooden “tree” shelters a performance stage and authentic Azerbaijani garden below. Inside, dynamic video screens on the floor will guide your path as you plant “seeds for the future”, using a unique card chosen at the pavilion’s entrance to power a variety of interactive, thought-provoking exhibits.

The Azerbaijan Pavilion’s central column takes the shape of a stylised tree trunk, with massive wooden “branches” that extend upwards to cradle its top level, as an elevated walkway hugs its base. The pavilion is sheltered by a vast, leaf-shaped canopy.

In 2018, 15 international teams of university students met for the first Solar Decathlon Middle East, a competition – organised Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) – to build the solar-powered home of tomorrow. Explore Team Virginia Tech’s winning “FutureHAUS Dubai”, as well as other smart designs at the DEWA Pavilion. Constructed from prefabricated “cartridges”, FutureHAUS Dubai thrives fully off the grid. From the solar roof to the temperature-buffering entryway, the home was designed to maximise efficiency and to provide plenty of futuristic touches. This compact eco-marvel gives visitors a peek at how we may live in the future.

FutureHAUS Dubai takes shape as a simple, white rectangle constructed from nine structural cartridges with a slightly overhanging roof. As well as maximising efficiency it contains plenty of futuristic touches, including a drone-delivery hatch and a weight-measuring bathroom floor.

The Bhutan Pavilion at Expo 2020 offers visitors a wide-ranging tour of this diverse nation, from its beautiful snow-covered peaks to its artisanal treasures. Experience a traditional Bhutanese mask dance, explore the 13 varieties of handicrafts that have moulded the nation’s identity, and catch digital video features on Bhutan’s culture and sand mandalas.

Combining traditional exhibits on Iranian art and crafts with an immersive array of live audio-visual feeds, the Islamic Republic of Iran Pavilion offers a real-time look into the life of Iranian citizens. The pavilion is spread across several sleekly designed “boxes”, each offering a different perspective on the nation’s ancient culture. As you explore Iran’s production of saffron (known as “red gold” for its rarity and expense) or peruse its artisan-made carpets, curated video displays will digitally transport you to real Iranian bazaars, stunning landscapes and more.

Inspired by the many tales in the classic book One Thousand and One Nights, the Islamic Republic of Iran Pavilion is a collection of 13 box-like blue buildings of various sizes, each of them housed within a curtain of hanging, bronze-coloured balls. These curtain structures surround each building on all four sides, and they are made of long strands of clay beads that part to admit visitors.

The concept infuses this diverse nation’s pavilion, which surrounds you with South Africa’s wealth of natural wonders, rich heritage, and creative, innovative spark. At once a mining industry powerhouse, a sports hub, and a tourism destination, the country brims with adventures: go on a wildlife safari, spy whales off its rugged coast, or move to the beat of Cape Town music. Play on interactive displays that share how the country is using ubuntu in its approach to industrialisation, through human-centred and sustainable initiatives.
