The Fourth Industrial Revolution is underway, driven by a dizzying fusion of disruptive technologies across all industries and yet not accessible to all. In this great transition, we must ensure that humanity ends up the winner.

Billions of people are now connected by mobile devices, with unprecedented processing power and access to knowledge. Technology breakthroughs in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things and biotechnology, are transforming the way we live, work and interact with unlimited possibilities. What is commonly referred to as the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ has deep economic, social, political, cultural and environmental impacts. 

To date, these changes have mostly benefitted those with access to the digital world, through both physical devices and data connectivity. In light of the looming threat of widening the existing inequalities, it is essential to think about the place of humans, and how this new industrial revolution can lead to more positive transformations that will improve people’s lives and how more people can be part of it.

At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

For thousands of years, Morocco’s Berber people have built their traditional squared homes and villages out of mud brick, producing structures that have stood for centuries. The Morocco Pavilion at Expo 2020 advances this form in dazzling style, combining modern design and rich heritage to create a uniquely vertical journey through Morocco.

As you ascend the ramp through the pavilion, you’ll experience ancient streetscapes and cutting-edge innovations: everything from traditional Moroccan gardens to one of the world’s largest solar-energy plants, Noor-Ouarzazate. It all ends with a stunning panoramic view from the pavilion’s rooftop area.

Traditional vertical mud-brick villages get a modernist makeover at the Morocco Pavilion. Over a dozen giant blocks formed from hundreds of earthen cubes are stacked in a loose, offset pattern to create a lively, four-storey tower that faintly glows with rusty orange warmth.

As part of the International Day of La Francophonie at Expo 2020 Dubai, the OIF (Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie) is organizing a series of four conferences in "Ted Talks" format to promote innovations and young talents in the Francophonie of the future. This first meeting focuses on the theme: "Digital, a powerful lever for action at the service of young people". Keynote speakers include Ben-Manson Toussaint from Haiti, who is a researcher and entrepreneur in artificial intelligence, and Co-founder of the specialized translation platform Seekncheck; alongside Matina Razafimahefa from Madagascar, Co-founder of Sayna - the first digital school in Madagascar.

Only half the world is connected to the internet and in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) that number drops to less than 1 in 5 people. The pandemic brought to the forefront the challenges associated with this gap, for example a third of children globally cannot be reached for remote learning because they do not have access to the internet or a computer at home. This gap in access has been shown to disproportionately affect frontline workers, refugees, women, rural communities, and other marginalised groups.

To take steps toward closing this widening gap, the Closing the Digital Divide event will convene governments, international organisations, digital innovators, private sector representatives, startups, and social advocates to discuss solutions providing equal access to digital connectivity. These stakeholders will focus on the opportunity of scaling innovations that increase connectivity on a national level but also internationally. This event will help identify concrete solutions and examples of digital tools that can empower marginalised populations across different dimensions including health, society, finance, and education.

Each year, residents of Peru’s Quehue District re-weave Q’Eswachaka, the last of the Incan rope bridges, in a custom that goes back 600 years. Now, at the Peru Pavilion, you can witness this ancient tradition in real time, as part of a wide-ranging showcase of Peru’s timeless culture. The pavilion’s elegant, loom-like exterior is a reference to Peruvian traditional woven crafts but, from nutrient-rich superfoods to staggering ancient ruins, there’s much to explore from one of the world’s most biodiverse nations.

The Peru Pavilion is a large rectangular structure wrapped in a woven-looking façade, like a vibrantly coloured traditional blanket draped over a grand table. This woven element, which is composed of layered, multi-coloured vertical lines, surrounds the entire pavilion, curving up on the bottom left side to reveal an open, shaded courtyard and performance space. On the lower right, the pavilion’s tall entryway slices through the woven exterior and plunges down a glowing tunnel.

Rather than bury its past, Rwanda has chosen a path of openness and healing, and at Expo 2020, you can see the transformative results in a remarkable journey that leads visitors through the dark of night to the dawn of a new day. The Rwanda Pavilion takes visitors through the nation’s full, unvarnished story, from colonial times to the 1994 genocide to the present day, in which the process of reconciliation has turned the country into a beacon of hope. Attractions include immersive exhibits on Rwandan history, a virtual-reality installation showcasing the nation’s technological advancements and a café in which to reflect on the experience.

Closing the Digital Divide

Back in 2015, United Nations unveiled the Sustainable Development Goals as a means to work towards a better future. Expo 2020 Dubai’s purpose embodies the two main pillars of these goals: sustainability and opportunity. The global COVID-19 pandemic has further proved the urgency of this global agenda. As this mega-event takes place, Expo 2020 Dubai will become the center of commitment and action in ensuring that no one is left behind. The Leave No One Behind Track of Expo 2020 Dubai's Programme for People and Planet features a tapestry of event series that spotlight the importance of opportunity for all, gender equality and much more.
