At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

MENASA - Emirati Design Platform offers visitors an overview of the UAE’s vibrant artisan culture. Its bespoke collections are created with top local and international designers and explore seven Emirati “Craft Stories”: safeefa, clay, talli, sadu, coffee making, Gargour making and pearl diving. Each story leads you through the processes involved in crafting the design collections. The programme’s space hosts design collections to stimulate and inspire. Many of the one-of-a-kind pieces on display are also available to take home, with each purchase helping to sustain the local design ecosystem.

Aiming to identify, curate, promote and present Emirati design and crafts through exclusive design collections and curated content, MENASA provides a unique opportunity to explore traditional Emirati crafts through contemporary design, innovative materials and advanced processes. The platform features exciting design collaborations between over 40 local and international designers from 11 countries.

MENASA: The Power of Storytelling in Design

A panel discussion on women and the challenge of sustainability, highlighting perspectives from the fields of architecture, design, education and business. Top international voices will join the conversation, to speak about topics of gender, identity, sustainability, design and handcraft, and artisan heritage.

On the panel is Patricia Urquiola, globally-renowned designer and architect; Dina Storey, Director of Sustainability of Expo 2020; Lorena del Río, Director of projects at SEGIPSA and specialist in Urbanism, Planning and Environment; Juan Roldán, Professor at the American University of Sharjah College of Architecture, Jesús Llinares, CEO of Andreu World; and Samer Yamani, Founder and Director of Creative Dialogue. The talk will be moderated by Lena Marcuccili, Head Content Director of Love that Design. 

The audience will be invited to participate in discussions on the connections between diversity, ecology and innovation. Members of the panel will speak about how to create and manufacture product and furniture design as part of a circular economy, using sustainable materials. This event offers the opportunity to explore the contributions and actions of women in relation to the sustainable design movement, discover the future of work and wellbeing, and understand the challenges of sustainable design.
