The Sweden Pavilion offers visitors an enchanting blend of cultures, combining a Nordic woodland-inspired experience with Middle Eastern architectural flair for a tour of the bio-circular economies and sustainable initiatives of tomorrow. The pavilion’s tree-filled design leads visitors through a variety of “clearings”, where interactive multimedia exhibits present an array of themed topics. Explore next-generation travel systems, immerse yourself in futuristic cities and relax to the authentic sounds of Sweden’s rich woodlands.

The essence of the forest inspires the Sweden Pavilion, which fuses dense Nordic woodland and Islamic geometric design in a plaza full of cozy tree house structures and hundreds of tree trunks, some as tall as 18 metres. The building’s airy ground floor is built for wandering, housing public areas, exhibitions, and cafés, while the tree house conference rooms are raised aloft, forming a roof over parts of the pavilion.

Italy’s voyage to Expo 2020 began long before opening day, when three custom-crafted boats set sail from Venice, Genoa and Naples. Nearly 10,000 kilometres later, the vessels arrived in Dubai and were hoisted up on steel pillars to form the roof of the Italy Pavilion, a striking showcase of culture, science and the nautical arts.

Inside the pavilion, beyond a dramatic veil of LED strands, stylish exhibits await. See a five-metre-tall 3D-printed replica of Michelangelo’s legendary David statue, learn about algae at a cluster of naturally multicoloured pools or gaze up and contemplate the fanciful hanging gardens embedded in the boats’ hulls.

The Italy Pavilion at Expo 2020 is a dramatic, open structure reminiscent of a giant carnival tent, with a swooping canopy and a layer of 20-metre-tall white strands surrounding its interior like a veil. A set of high steel pillars support its imaginative roof, which is formed from the hulls of three boats.

Her Excellency Sarah bint Yousef Al Amiri is the UAE Minister of State for Advanced Technology and Chairwoman of the UAE Space Agency. Her Excellency spearheads the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology’s efforts to empower the adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies and promote research and development in the advanced science and technology sector, in order to create new industries that drive the shift towards a knowledge economy. This, in turn, contributes to the overall mandate of the Ministry to strengthen the UAE’s industrial base, ensure in-country value, and raise the competitiveness of local industries. Her Excellency is responsible to oversee the Agency’s mandate of guiding the space sector, ensuring its contribution to the national economy and to the UAE’s sustainable development.

H.E. Yousuf Hamad AlShaibani is the Director General for Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) and one of its founding members. Since his appointment in 2013, AlShaibani has led MBRSC to become the regional leader in space research, exploration, and technology. In addition, he is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at MBRSC, the Director General, Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC) and board member for UAE Space Agency and Smart Dubai. AlShaibani graduated from Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) in 1995 and earned a Master of Science in Microelectronics Systems Design from Birmingham City University in the UK.

She is an assistant professor in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society with a courtesy appointment at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, USA. Timiebi was a post-doctoral fellow and fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) based in Waterloo, Ontario Canada, and participated in a Canada-India Track 1.5 Dialogue. 
Timiebi was Executive Director of the World Space Week Association. She is currently on the Advisory Board for the Space Generation Advisory Council supporting the UN Programme on Space Applications. She is also on the ScienceAdvisory Board of World View Enterprises and the SETI institute and is a Senior Global Futures Scientist at the Global Futures Lab at ASU.

Cecilia Hertz started her career in the space sector, when doing her Diploma work at NASA, Houston, developing the interior of the Crew Return Vehicle, a rescue vehicle planned for the International Space Station. Umbilical Design was founded in 2001 by industrial designer Cecilia Hertz, and since its inception has worked with NASA and ESA on design for the space industry. 
Umbilical Design is an innovation consultancy company with over 15 years of experience in space technology transfer representing Sweden as part of ESA Space Solutions Network. Cecilia Hertz has been successful in showing how design, technology and material from the space industry can be transferred to sustainable solutions.

Yamazaki earned a Master of Engineering degree majored in Aerospace Engineering from University of Tokyo in 1996, then started working for current Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.  In 1999, she was selected as an astronaut candidate and was qualified as a Soyuz-TMA Flight Engineer in 2004 and NASA Mission Specialist in 2006. On April 5, 2010 Yamazaki was onboard Space Shuttle Discovery on the crew of STS-131, an assembly & resupply mission to the International Space Station.  After retiring from JAXA in 2011, Yamazaki has been serving as a member of Japan Space Policy Committee of Cabinet Office, and devoting herself to space education as an adviser of Young Astronaut Club and a chairperson of “Sorajo (women in aerospace)” under Japanese Rocket Society.

Jessica U. Meir was selected by NASA in 2013. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Brown University, a Master of Science in Space Studies from the International Space University, and a Doctorate in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UCSD). From 2000 to 2003, Dr. Meir worked for Lockheed Martin’s Human Research Facility, supporting human physiology research. During this time, she also participated in research flights on NASA’s reduced gravity aircraft and served as an aquanaut in an underwater habitat for NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO).  Prior to becoming an astronaut, her career as a scientist focused on the physiology of animals in extreme environments. Meir most recently served as flight engineer on the International Space Station for Expedition 61 and 62.

Christer Fuglesang is a former ESA astronaut and professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Director of KTH Space Center. He also consults for Saab, where he is in the Strategy Group. Fuglesang was a Fellow at CERN 1988-1990. He became an ESA astronaut in 1992 and made two space missions in 2006 and 2009 with the space shuttle Discovery to ISS. Retired from ESA 2017 and became employed by KTH in Stockholm.

Mario Vargas (Shakaim) is an Indigenous Shuar from the Ecuadorian Amazon, and the the leader and technician of the Shuar Federation of Pastaza. Mario is a founding member of the GEO Indigenous Alliance which aims to foster a continued, effective, respectful, and reciprocal relationship with GEO and representatives of Indigenous communities from around the world.  He is a member of the Network of Climate Finance Specialists, as a representative of South America, and  currently works at The Coordinator of the Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA), as Technical Coordinator of the environmental monitoring project “All Eyes on the Amazon” (TOA). Mario graduated from the Polytechnic College of Chimborazo and is specialising in Public Management at the Postgraduate University of Ecuador.

At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

Inside and out, the focus here is on Australian innovation. From the ancient astronomy of the Aboriginal peoples, which you can learn about through an immersive projection show on the pavilion’s interior dome, to the sustainably produced timber that forms the pavilion’s hill-shaped exterior, there’s no shortage of blue-sky ideas here to explore.

Malaysia’s Taman Negara is the worlds' most ancient tropical rainforest – and the country’s pavilion at Expo 2020 is here to show us how they’ll keep it healthy for future generations. With its net-zero green design and simulated rainforest canopies, the Malaysia Pavilion presents an inspiring vision for a sustainable future.

The pavilion takes visitors along a woodland path through 3D graphical experiences, “groves” of digitally enhanced columns and exhibits that explore Malaysia’s commitment to balancing economic and environmental health. You can also enjoy Malaysian flavours at the café or a performance in the outdoor amphitheatre.
