The United Nations’ Climate Change Conference COP26 will be hosted by the UK in Glasgow, in collaboration with Italy. It is an urgent call to action to everyone around the world, from governments to students, artists to technologists, and is an appeal to tackle climate change collectively together immediately.

Inspired by British physicist Stephen Hawking, who challenged humanity to ponder how we might express ourselves to alien civilisations, the UK Pavilion invites visitors to contribute to a unique linguistic experiment. While exploring this cone-shaped structure, which showcases the UK’s contributions to space science and artificial intelligence, you can add your own words to the pavilion’s neural network. A language-generating algorithm then processes these entries into an ever-changing “poem” that will be displayed on the pavilion’s LED façade, providing an inspiring collective message to Expo 2020, our planet and maybe even worlds beyond.

The awe-inspiring UK Pavilion is an epic, 20-metre-tall, cone-shaped structure compiled of rows of horizontal timber slats that stretch forward to create a circular form. The end of each slat houses a LED panel that emits phrases that link to form an ever-changing interstellar message crafted by artificial intelligence and Expo visitors.

Serving as the first Future Generations Commissioner for Wales since February 2016, Sophie acts as a guardian for the interests of future generations in Wales, supporting the public bodies listed in the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 to work towards achieving the well-being goals. Prior to this, Sophie was the first Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales, served as a Government Special Adviser to the Cabinet and First Minister on communities, local government, community safety, housing, regeneration and equality, and at age 21, was elected as the youngest County councillor in Wales. She is currently a member of the Wales Committee of the Equality and Human Rights Commission and Chair of the international Network of Institutions for Future Generations.

Dr Professor Diana Ürge-Vorsatz holds a Ph.D. from the University of California (Los Angeles and Berkeley).  She served as the Acting Head of Department in 2002-2003 and directed the PhD program in 2003 – 2004. She was a Visiting Professor at the International Christian University of Tokyo and a Research Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). She served as the Co-Chair of the Scientific Steering Committee of the major Cities and Climate Change Science conference in Edmonton, 2018.  She was a Coordinating Lead Author in both the Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports (AR4 and AR5) of the IPCC.  She served on the United Nation’s Scientific Expert Group on Climate Change, and led the buildings-related work in the Global Energy Assessment.

Alderman William Russell took office as the 692nd Lord Mayor of the City of London on 8th November 2019. He served as a Sheriff of the City of London in 2016-17 and, in that capacity, supported the then Lord Mayor, undertaking numerous visits and official functions. On 30th September 2020 William was elected to serve a further year in office, to provide continuity of civic governance during the Coronavirus emergency. His second term began on 13 November 2020. His mayoral theme for his time in office is “Global UK –The New Future”, supporting businesses through the COVID19 crisis, speeding the recovery and seizing the opportunities of the new future. William has over thirty years’ experience in the financial and business City including holding senior positions in the national and international Banking sector.

The Netherlands Pavilion’s eco-friendly exterior of reclaimed iron might remind you of the past, but this place belongs to the sustainable future. In the middle of the arid Dubai desert, the pavilion uses innovative engineering to create a “closed-loop” biotope, producing its own energy, water and even food. A towering 17-metre-tall central cone provides an impressive focal point, upon which edible greens such as cress and sprouts are grown. Within the pavilion is a unique multi-sensory show that highlights the closed-loop farm’s wonders, from the water harvested from thin air to the mushrooms grown on the walls.

Innovative and sustainable, the Netherlands Pavilion not only sourced its construction materials locally in the UAE, but functions as a “closed-loop” biotope that produces its own energy, water, and even food. 

Shaped like an enormous theatre stage, the sides and back of the pavilion are built from orange-red reclaimed metal beams that form a wavy accordion-like pattern inside and out. The roof is constructed from huge metal tubes bound together into panels.

Founded in 1981, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is an economic and political union that works to unlock the potential of the Arabian Gulf region through cooperation and innovation. The Gulf Cooperation Council Pavilion at Expo 2020 offers a spin on this theme of unity, braiding the GCC’s thousands of stories into a golden centrepiece.

Inside, follow six groups of threads (symbolising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the GCC’s six member states) on a tour of the region’s topography, history and intertwined cultures. In the pavilion’s grand central cube, these threads weave and twist into a magnificent golden knot.

Symphonically weaving lines and shapes, the GCC Pavilion is an abstract collection of modernist white structures with a giant cube standing at its centre. On the building’s right, several dune-like façades evoke a feeling of desert and sand. To the left, a low rectangular building welcomes visitors through large doors.

Ameer Ebrahim is a marine ecologist with a vast experience in fisheries management and ecology. He received his PhD in Marine Ecology mid last year at the University of Queensland, Australia. His research was focused on the ecological and functional roles of commercially important rabbitfish species in a marine environment. He has recently been appointed as Technical Coordinator and Advisor to the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA). His role primarily involves developing, facilitating, coordinating scientific research and projects within the SFA, and forming strong international ties within the sector. He also acts as the Advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and to the Ministry of Fisheries and the Blue Economy. Dr. Ebrahim is also the Chief Scientific Advisor to the James Michel Foundation (NGO).

Anna-Greta Tsahkna is the founder and CEO of Timbeter and Vice-President on Estonian Association of Information Technology and Telecommunications. Timbeter helps the forestry industry to save time and costs by making processes more objective and transparent, enabling better control and fair trade. Solution helps companies to manage their timber sustainably and governments with the fight against illegal logging. Timbeter as company started off from hackathon Garage48, an event that was specially dedicated to bring more women to IT. He  joined the Private sector to work in a Carbon Project in Cheringoma and Gorongosa, working at the Nhambita and Zambezi Delta Projects for 6 years. In 2014 Aristides re-joined the Government (MICOA) as a technical assistant for REDD+ projects in Maputo, where he was involved in the development of the first jurisdictional REDD+ project (under the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility) in 9 districts of the Zambezia Province.

Leading up to this position, he held strategic positions in the field of biodiversity conservation with special focus at environmental and climate financing. A seasoned environmental expert with over 19 years’ experience in the area of environmental fiscal reforms, climate change financing, resource mobilisation, and investment structuring. He serves on several international environmental and climate change bodies. He holds a Master’s Degree in Developmental Studies from the University of the Free State, South Africa, and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University Leicester, England.

Fouad Abdou Rabi is a graduate engineer in fisheries resources management at the University of Murmansk in Russia. He has also followed several training courses in marine environment management and participated in the establishment of the first national park of the Comoros (Moheli marine park) in 2001. Currently, he manages the national system of protected areas of the Comoros which is composed of 6 national parks. He is a member of several regional NGOs including the regional network for coral reef management in the Indian Ocean.
