Conjuring water from desert air

Drawing inspiration from the seemingly magical ways plants capture water in the natural world, the monumental Water Tree uses clever design to harvest moisture from Dubai’s desert air. At night, its massive disc-like top works as a funnel, attracting dew from the humid air, using gravity to pull it into a central collection channel. The result is usable fresh water – and another innovative example of Expo 2020’s commitment to sustainability

Comprised of a massive metal funnel that sits atop a thick tapered column, the Water Tree stands approximately 10 metres tall. The wide disc at the top faces straight up, while its sides slope down at a 30-degree angle. The trunk of the tree is formed from ridges of metal which gradually merge into the funnel disc, giving the impression of branches unfolding overhead.
