The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development. Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.

Today, 258 million children and youth still do not attend school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable.

Education is a human right, a public good and our shared responsibility.

Under the title “New Perspectives”, the Women’s World Majlis programme invites you to recognise a fundamental principle: when women thrive, humanity thrives.

The programme highlights the impact women have made on society and shines a light on their often forgotten contributions. By shifting perspectives, we embrace the infinite approaches to a more balanced world.

A common vision for a unique collaboration; sustainable development goals and aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous world cannot be achieved without gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Given that contemporary ideas of knowledge and education have privileged the textual, other forms of cultural knowledge - oral, musical or movement based - need closer attention in  order for us to better understand our antecedents. This series of round tables, keynotes and performances will explore the preservation and knowledge of Intangible Cultural Heritage and its contribution to the development of new partnerships across sustainability, climate change, community building and coexistence. At a time of rapid and profound change in our socio-economic and natural ecosystems, intangible heritage is more likely to dissipate at an increased pace. Without rapid response, especially in regions least represented in international safeguarding efforts, we might lose these valuable practices and knowledge forever. A ‘listening pause’ gives the stage to those practitioners who are grappling with these questions in critical ways.

The Spain Pavilion at Expo 2020 is an open, eco-friendly exhibition that seamlessly blends ancient heritage and cutting-edge innovation.

An airy ground floor features several small, naturally cooled plazas that are ideal for relaxing or snacking on tapas. Venture underground into aroomy basement, and you’ll explore a “forest of the future” filled with thought-provoking exhibits on Spain’s contributions to global sustainability.

Inspired by Spain’s age-old links to the Arab world, the Spain Pavilion takes the shape of a lively field of sheer, conical towers in hues of brick, orange, and saffron yellow. Visitors venture under this vast canopy of peaks, built from reusable materials including wood, iron and fabric, to explore a series of breezy plazas. The underside of each airy dome is decorated with unique textures that reflect their exhibits: swirls of woven straw, a green canopy of plants, falls of digital water, and more. One dome also shelters a tasty tapas restaurant.

John "Meta" Sarmiento

Ragy Saro is currently the Head of International Organisations at Expo 2020 Dubai. He oversees the engagement of international and regional organisations and leads on diverse programs, such as Dignified Storytelling. Prior to Expo 2020, Ragy was External Relations Officer at the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), managing partnerships, resource mobilization and communication. He led several advocacy campaigns, including the Making Cities Resilient Campaign. Ragy holds a Master’s Degree in management with a focus on international organisations. His love for biodiversity goes beyond spending most of his free time diving and exploring the oceans; he is an adamant advocate for the conservation of sharks – one of the most valuable and vulnerable species today. He has a passion for storytelling and film.
