The programme highlights the impact women have made on society and shines a light on their often forgotten contributions. By shifting perspectives, we embrace the infinite approaches to a more balanced world.

A common vision for a unique collaboration; sustainable development goals and aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous world cannot be achieved without gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Globalisation and the transformations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution haven’t made us all richer in equal ways. Fewer people may be living in poverty today than at any other time in history, but inequalities in income and access to opportunities are at their widest ever. Moreover, the increased flow of goods, services, capital, people, and ideas across the globe has led to serious negative effects on the environment. 

The economic theories that for decades have shaped the direction of growth and development are clearly failing to account for the value of the environment and natural human behaviour, as well as the role of empathy and social responsibility. New models and indicators that factor in environmental, health and social impact alongside business will be needed to enrich and extend the current approaches.

At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

Terra is a super-sized marvel of forward-thinking design. The pavilion’s technology generates enough energy in a year to power a Nissan Leaf to drive halfway to Mars, while another system captures moisture from the air you breathe and turns it into drinkable water. Capped by a digitally enhanced “cumulus cloud” that provides shade in the daytime and a canvas for dazzling light displays at night, the Australia Pavilion is a vibrant showcase for the kind of imagination Australians like to call “Blue Sky Dreaming”.

Inside and out, the focus here is on Australian innovation. From the ancient astronomy of the Aboriginal peoples, which you can learn about through an immersive projection show on the pavilion’s interior dome, to the sustainably produced timber that forms the pavilion’s hill-shaped exterior, there’s no shortage of blue-sky ideas here to explore.

With a crescent-shaped first level that resembles dusty hills and a cloud-like shade structure hanging overhead, the Australia Pavilion is designed to evoke a dramatic Outback landscape.

Malaysia’s Taman Negara is the worlds' most ancient tropical rainforest – and the country’s pavilion at Expo 2020 is here to show us how they’ll keep it healthy for future generations. With its net-zero green design and simulated rainforest canopies, the Malaysia Pavilion presents an inspiring vision for a sustainable future.

The pavilion takes visitors along a woodland path through 3D graphical experiences, “groves” of digitally enhanced columns and exhibits that explore Malaysia’s commitment to balancing economic and environmental health. You can also enjoy Malaysian flavours at the café or a performance in the outdoor amphitheatre.

The Whanganui River is so important to New Zealand’s Maori people that in 2017, it was granted a special legal identity, giving it the rights of a citizen. Now, the New Zealand Pavilion offers a sweeping cultural tour narrated by the Whanganui River itself.

With a design inspired by the Maori tradition of hand-crafting containers to safeguard items of value, the pavilion leads you on a journey of conservation where the greatest treasure to be protected is our natural world. Immerse yourself in the river’s story, deepen the experience with the pavilion’s web-based app, and journey through a 10-metre-high “vertical river” of water droplets.


New Zealand

The New Zealand Pavilion features a tall box clad in titanic wavy panels of chainmail-like architectural mesh called Kaynemaile. Its flexible façade pulses to evoke a living building and sits on a base crafted from New Zealand Abodo eco-timber. The ground floor’s wooden exterior lends a warm feel to the modernist design, welcoming visitors through a small gap beneath the mammoth Kaynemaile panels.
